The Optical Network Engineer is a key part of the ViaSat team, responsible for designing the company’s core network infrastructure to support our expanding satellite fleet. This includes but is not limited to architecting DWDM systems, creating written network implementation design plans, and troubleshooting system issues. You will work on layer 1 through layer 3 network design, capacity planning, platform management and maintenance, as well as serve as an escalation point for significant network events.
Design routes for fiber-based networks including point to point, ring, and path diverse routing
Plans, designs, develops, and implements optical network engineering plans and wide-scale networks
Create written design documentation and training in support of network configurations and new technology introductions including detailed implementation project plans and procedures
Identify and recommend hardware and support solutions based on research and analysis of new technologies.
Guide testing teams through selection and qualification of optical systems
Identifies and develops functional test requirements and analyzes test results
Provides technical support for complex activation, deployment, and maintenance activities and issues
Work with operations to ensure systems are thoroughly supported by monitoring and managing systems
Act as the technical point of contact for implementation team
Act as an escalation contact during large outages, performing root cause failure analysis
Troubleshoot optical transport issues using OTDR, OSA, BERT, and optical power meters
BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering
5 – 10 years of progressive experience in an optical network engineering position including design and architecture
Experience with use of fiber network design, planning and mapping software tools such as 3-GIS, ESRI ArcGIS and QGIS
Operational experience with multi-vendor DWDM network equipment
Operational experience working with major carriers
Strong hands on technical knowledge of network components
Experience in system engineering and test and link analysis with vendor-specific tools
Experience with 100G coherent detection long-haul networks
Experience architecting, installing and operating DWDM systems
U.S citizenship or permanent resident status required
Understanding of outside plant construction requirements with fiber experience preferred
Participation in industry forums regarding optical evolution
IP and Ethernet networking experience
Strong written and oral communications skills with the ability to influence others with your engineering solutions
