The Optical Communication Section is responsible for research, development, testing and integration of prototypes. It is an integral part of the Elecro-Optical and Infrared Systems and Technologies Group within the Air and Missile Defense Sector.
Our diverse interdisciplinary team is motivated by maturing technology from concept to field. As an Optical Communications or Photonics engineer, you will be kept engaged as you lead and participate in research, design, development, test, evaluate can conduct systems engineering activities of advanced novel prototype systems. The breath of these projects include optical, electrical and RF subsystems for applications in fiber optic and free-space optical communications and sensors.
Here are some of the major contributions you will be making to help impact your career while achieving the Sections goals and mission.
1. Evaluate optical, electrical, and RF hardware through laboratory testing using optical test equipment such as bit error rate testers, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and other test equipment (40%). 2. Develop algorithms, models, simulations and/or software for concept evaluation, data analysis, experiment automation and/or subsystem control and testing (30%). 3. Support field integration and testing activities of prototype photonic and communication systems and sensors (15%). 4. Document results of development and testing. Provide both written documentation and oral presentations, including sponsor briefs, publication of conference proceedings, and journal articles. 4. Formally document work in sponsor briefings and reports, academic journals, and conference presentations. (15%)
• B.S. degree in electrical engineering, optics, physics, or closely related field with 3+ years of experience • Experience with fiber optics, communications systems, laser systems, adaptive optics systems and/or laser beam control systems • Experience with optical and RF test and measurement equipment and laboratory tools • Familiarity with Matlab, LabVIEW, C/C++ and/or Python • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team • Strong oral and written communication skills • Ability to support travel for meetings or field tests locally and out-of-state • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret or higher clearance
Desired Qualifications: • M.S. degree with 3+ years of experience or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, optics, physics, or closely related field • Experience with the design, development, integration, testing, and systems engineering of complex optical communication and sensor systems • Desire to contribute to the development of programs focusing on innovative fiber and free-space optical communications and sensors • Experience with complex data analysis, system modeling, experiment automation, algorithm development and/or software development in Matlab, Labview and/or C. • Top Secret or higher clearance
Special work conditions: 10% travel
