We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to work within a highly capable team of mechanical, optical and electrical engineers to build the most innovative and complex Wavelength Selective Switches for our international clients. The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to develop and implement the design of optical modules and assemblies and will have a good understanding of processes used to develop and manufacture complex products composed of mechanical, electrical, and optical components.
The Mechanical Engineer will gain knowledge and be responsible for the overall mechanical design, specifications, and performance of developing products and assemblies for use in telecom applications and next generation agile optical networks.
What You Will Do In Your Role
Design & develop cutting-edge wavelength selective switch (WSS) systems & subsystems from concept through procurement
3D modelling (Solidworks, Creo) of product & fixturing
Balance customer requirements, design for manufacturing, cross-functional team inputs and industry standard qualification testing
Set up and run simplified thermal and structural simulations
Conduct structured design reviews, document design decisions, and plan milestones for mechanical design delivery
2D spec creation (Solidworks, Creo) including GD&T per ASME Y14.5-2009
Maintain proper version control in PDM system via ECO in change management systems (Omnify, Solidworks PDM, TortoiseSVN)
Perform research on technology and manufacturing techniques to promote future generation products
Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis of mechanical aspects of product
Handoff of requirements documents and simplified design files for off-site simulation teams to perform detailed thermal and stress analyses
The Experience You Will Bring
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
Minimum of 3 years of mechanical design experience
Experience and advanced proficiency with SolidWorks 3D modelling
Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5-2009
Knowledge of standard engineering-grade metal, finishing and plating techniques
Knowledge of part fabrication and design for manufacturing including: CNC, EDM, injection molding, rapid prototyping
Experience and familiarity with a revision control and structured change/ECO management processes
Working knowledge of complex tolerance analyses
What Will Put You Ahead
Experience with Creo Parametric (Pro/Engineer)
Experience with hands-on machining & fabrication, including milling, lathing, wire-EDM, and additive manufacturing
Familiarity with simulation and data analysis tools for finite element, thermal, vibration, stress analysis
Experience with precision glass-metal interface design and assembly techniques (structural/thermal considerations, safety factor calculations, epoxy choice and analysis)
Experience with shipping packaging design to meet industry standard & customer-specified requirements
