Description of Duties:
The American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics or Institute) is a Department of Defense (DoD)- sponsored program awarded to the State University of New York’s (SUNY) Research Foundation (RF) and managed by the New York Center for Research, Economic Advancement, Technology, Engineering and Science Corporation (NY CREATES) management, an affiliate of RF SUNY. In its role as administrator of AIM Photonics, RF SUNY is responsible for developing a sustainable end-to-end photonics ecosystem to insure U.S competitiveness in technologies important to enabling advanced telecommunications, sensors, computing, and other photonic technologies. The Institute’s scope includes domestic prototyping with a path to high volume foundry access, integrated design tools, packaging, assembly and test capabilities, and workforce development.
The Institute comprises a technical and business organization focused on wafer-scale fabrication of silicon integrated photonic systems in Albany, NY, and a test, assembly, and packaging (TAP) facility in Rochester, NY. The Institute is supported by approximately 25-35 RF SUNY employees across engineering, business and administrative disciplines at these two sites.
There are currently just over 100 government agency, industrial, and academic members within AIM Photonics all focused upon organizing and growing the fragmented emerging domestic capabilities within the integrated photonics technology eco-system. The goal of AIM Photonics is to better position small- and medium-sized companies in the U.S. relative to global competition in this field and to address government agency requirements. Consequently, activities under the Institute are focused on enabling universities and small to medium enterprises to participate in, and gain access to, the burgeoning integrated photonics marketplace. The Institute coordinates the activities of external partner staff across these member organizations.

The incumbent will anchor the Institute and its technology offerings in the market as the world-leading integrated photonics one-stop-shop, and will identify means to pave the way towards self-sufficiency and sustainability. S/he will establish open communication channels with AIM Photonics’ stakeholders, drive public-private collaborations, and identify new business opportunities to stimulate institute growth and convert innovations into revenue-generating business opportunities within a technically aggressive and economically competitive environment.
The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of AIM Photonics, which includes overseeing all Institute activities, implementing the strategic direction of the Institute, securing funding, managing the TAP facility in Rochester, NY and the photonics wafer runs in Albany, NY, managing the engineering teams in Albany, NY and Rochester, NY, interfacing with the ecosystem and the program sponsors, as well as growing the user base and supporting their needs using AIM Photonics capabilities. The Executive Director also works with a Leadership Council comprised of industry, academic, DoD and State representatives from organizations making substantial investments in support of AIM Photonics. This position reports directly to the President of NYCREATES.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in technology, science, photonics or equivalent fields from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization, and have at least ten years of experience in the photonics field and experience managing large, cross-disciplinary, government-funded centers or institutes. Proven success working effectively with a broad array of diverse constituents including senior representatives from business, government and academia is required. Demonstrated analytical skills in research, development and translation to pre-commercial and commercial products as well as persuasive interpersonal, oral and written communication proficiency and experience with strategic planning, project and program management are required skill sets.
