Principle duties and essential functions

ADVA’s Advanced Technology team develops the optical networking technology of the future and initiates their transition into ADVA’s products.

The (Senior) Engineer Advanced Technology (M/F/D) will be assigned to advanced technology projects to define future solution, network and product aspects in the area of optical network and service planning and provisioning.

Main responsibilities are:

• Research and development innovative solutions in the field of network planning and service management of flexible optical networks.

• Architecture development and implementation of network planning tools

• Integration and interfacing of network planning, optical performance evaluation, service control and management tools

• Creative application of knowledge and experience in the following fields:

  • Development and evaluation of advanced optical network planning and service provisioning for disaggregated optical networks

  • Software-defined networking (SDN) for optical networks

  • Evaluation of novel network planning and operation technologies related to new ADVA products and solutions

  • Evaluation and techno-economic evaluation of network architectures

• Leading and contributing to research and advanced development projects

• Providing overviews and detailed techno-economic assessments on forward looking technologies to CTO, PLM and R&D community

• Demonstrating ADVA’s technical excellence at conferences/events

• Coordinating acquisition of publicly funded projects together with external partners

• Cooperation with customers and the research community in national and international projects

Supplementary Tasks

In addition, the (Senior) Engineer Advanced Technology (M/F/D) is responsible for the following tasks:

• Consulting R&D and PLM teams on novel technologies and solutions

• Supporting the transfer of research R&D results into product development

• Protecting intellectual property rights on novel technologies and product concepts

• Presenting and discuss technology topics with customers

• Examination of 3rd party and supplier solutions

• Representing ADVA in industry forums or standardization bodies

• PhD or Diploma/Master degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related area

• 3 to 5 years of experience in optical telecommunication R&D

• Profound understanding of digital communications

• Hands-on experience in several of the following areas:

  • Network planning

  • Graph algorithms

  • Optical performance evaluation, linear and non-linear impairments

  • SDN control (NETCONF, RESTCONF, gRPC/gNMI)

  • Microservices

• Excellent programming skills and experience (Java, Python, git version management)

• Excellent presentation, communication and scientific writing skills

• Fluent in oral and written English, fluency in German is a plus

• Experience in acquisition and management of collaborative research projects

• Regular international travel to conferences, project and customer meetings required
